October 3, 2010 – The Power of Jesus Still Heals

Storytelling with Grant Everett, Katherine Liddle, and Mary Huttar

Do you believe in miracles? A nun is healed of crippling arthritis instantly; a man awakes from a coma after several years; a cancer patient goes through months of medical treatment to fight a life-threatening disease, and is now cancer free. Do you believe these events are the acts of God, or coincidence?

Peter and John went to the temple at the hour of prayer. Seeing a man crippled from birth, in Jesus’ name they heal him. He is so filled with joy he leaps and jumps about, praising God. Later, two other people are healed in Jesus’ name in the vicinity of Joppa. The Bible clearly presents these as miracles which vindicate and honor Jesus.

Sometimes Christians feel a little ambivalent about the possibility of miracles. How do we come to grips with prayers that end in miracles and prayers that do not? That’s this week’s topic of conversation. We owe it to ourselves to explore the mystery. Come hear these exciting stories told by our excellent storytellers!

I have a few miracles that I am so thankful. The first one was Dec.6, 1981 was driving back from East Dallas late after basketball practice. Brenda went to a Tupperware party earlier that evening over at our friends’ house, it was a Wednesday night, it was cold and rainy, I didn’t bother to find out the temp but it was around 30 degrees. Brenda was in the other car following behind me entering off Ferguson Rd. As I entered the freeway, the freeway curves, anyway I hit some black ice and my car lost control, there was nothing I could do. I was heading for the center median. All I remember saying was, “Oh God! I hit sideways and bounce me back into on coming traffic like a pin ball machine, an 18 wheeler was coming at me, and he couldn’t turn away and hit me back into the guardrail. All I remember after he hit me was that my nose was bleeding. I must hit my face on the steering wheel. When the car stopped I was dazed but able to walk away, walking across the freeway to meet Brenda that was crying. She thought I was going to be killed because she watched the whole thing unfolded in front of her eyes. We waited at the Howard Johnson’s motel for the police and the truck driver that hit my car but he never came. At that time, I didn’t think much about it. We were not active in church so looking back I am so thankful to God that he saved us that night.

Every-time I see an accident on the freeway to this day, I wonder if God’s angles were watching over them too. It took me over a year before I could drive back over that same area.
